2015 Snowy Mountains holiday: Part 1

For our recent adventure away, we stayed in Talbingo, a small town reasonably close to the Selwyn Snowfields. The town is set on the edge of a dam and has gorgeous views, as well as being quiet, with short walks for families to go on. We walked to the dam and the little park for the kids to play, while we were there.

Travelling

The trip was uneventful and beautiful. It is probably the very first time I can say I enjoyed travelling by car anywhere. I wrote a bit about my personal journey in a previous post. We stopped at Yass (where my sister and her family used to live) for lunch. There is a great park there for the kids to play in. We perhaps stayed too long, because after stopping in Tumut for groceries, we arrived just after dark at our destination.

Our first day

Our first day was exciting. We visited Blowering Dam, Tumut and explored Talbingo. We were staying with my sister and her family. Cousins always make things fun! The kids had a great time finding lots to get up to in the different places we visited. The house we stayed in was perfect and above all: perfectly CLEAN. There was plenty of everything and it was warmer there than I am right now in my own house!

The kids' first snow experience

Daisy freaked out at first, but after one "slip" (as she called it) down the mountain with Craig, she loved it. That is until about 2 hours after nap time. Then she started crying. Isabel found the whole experience challenging: uncomfortable clothes, difficult gloves, cold etc. She felt much better after we sat down and just calmly played in the snow making a snowman. Lucy and Henry barely stopped. They would toboggan down the hill then ran back, making me envy their energy! Jack loved trying out using the toboggan in as many different ways as he could, trying to go as far as he could without stopping. All agreed that snow was harder than they imagined, but had fun.

Daisy was more than ready for a sleep!

With light still left, we decided to take the 38km trip from the turn off to the Selwyn Snowfields, to Old Adaminaby. A friend from work had recommended visiting. We had no idea where we were going (no internet or maps) but decided an adventure was on the cards. It also gave Daisy a chance to have a nap. The views along the way were beautiful.

Old Adaminaby was my favourite part of the trip. We visited on a whim and had to take guesses about where to go. The kids were free to explore and loved it. And we could just be for a while. Once it was almost dark we made our way back to the car, snuggled up under blankets (that I am sooooo grateful a friend recommended I bring along) and had a snack. The drive home quietly chatting with Craig as we watched the sun set was perfect, even as the temperature outside dipped to -3 degrees Celsius.

 Part 2, coming soon:)
